Turkish trade delegation visits Cairo after 2-year diplomatic drought

A delegation from Turkey’s trade federation visited Egypt Sunday to discuss means of boosting trade after two years of tense relations between both countries.

Turkish Cihan news agency said a delegation from the Union of Chambers and Commodities Exchanges (TOBB), led by chairman Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu along with three other executives, visited Cairo and met with Ahmed al-Wakil, head of the Federation of Egypt’s Chambers of Commerce.

“Turkish media speculated on Tuesday that the visit was being carried out with the implicit approval of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan,” the agency reported, adding that annual trade volume between Turkey and Egypt reached $3 billion in 2010.

Erdogan’s government condemned the ouster former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi in 2013, which prompted Cairo to severe ties with Ankara.
