Turkish PM offers congratulations over new constitution

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday congratulated President Mohamed Morsy on the approval of the draft constitution.

The Turkish daily Today’s Zaman reported on Monday that Erdogan phoned Morsy on Sunday and expressed his hope that the new constitution would benefit the Egyptian people amid the ongoing political turmoil that has been taking place since former President Hosni Mubarak's ouster in February 2011.

According to the report, Morsy thanked Erdogan and told him that the draft constitution is an important step toward stability in Egypt.

Semifinal results of the referendum indicate that the constitution was approved with 64 percent of votes, while 36 percent of voters rejected it. The turnout for the poll was estimated at around 30 percent.

The referendum’s two rounds took place on 15 and 22 December.

The new constitution would be enforced following announcement of the official results, expected on Tuesday.
