Following US President Donald Trump’s repeated statements regarding his proposal to control the Gaza Strip and displace its citizens, Turkey has reaffirmed its support for a two-state solution.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state with territorial integrity along the 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital can no longer be delayed.
Anything else is illegitimate for Turkey, he said, stressing the need for Israel to bear responsibility for the reconstruction of Gaza.
This statement came during a press conference held by Erdoğan with his Indonesian counterpart Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday in Bogor, West Java, as part of Erdoğan’s Asian tour, which includes Malaysia and Pakistan.
Here are the key points from the Turkish president’s speech.
- The establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state with territorial integrity along the 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital can no longer be delayed.
- Any step, proposal, or project that undermines this matter is illegitimate in our view, and it means more conflicts, bloodshed, and instability.
- Unless Gaza and the Palestinians enjoy peace, achieving stability in the region’s countries will not be possible.
- The total damage caused by Israeli attacks on Gaza over the past 15 months approaches 100 billion dollars.
- We must not forget that the principle in law is that the damage is to be claimed from the perpetrator.
With US support, Israel’s occupation committed a genocide in Gaza that left around 160,000 Palestinian dead and wounded – most of whom are children and women – and over 14,000 missing.
