Turkey issued a statement debunking reports that Turkish intelligence had asked its British counterpart to protect Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, according to a statement distributed by the Turkish Embassy in Cairo on Friday.
The Turkish Presidency’s Directorate for Fight Against Disinformation Center (DMM) said in its statement: “The news published today by a foreign news agency, claiming that Turkey asked the British intelligence service (MI6) to increase protection for Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa following the recent assassination attempt against him, is completely false.”
Turkish intelligence clarified that it had not requested anything from the British intelligence in this regard, nor had it assigned it this role.
The Turkish intelligence explained that it actively cooperates with both the international intelligence community and Syrian security forces in combating terrorism.
It noted that the recent successful operations carried out against the Islamic State terrorist organization, in cooperation with Syrian authorities, are the latest examples of this.
In its statement, the Turkish intelligence urged the public not to be misled by baseless claims and publications.
