A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck the Kamchatka region in Russia’s far east, Al Arabiya reported.
The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), a major international agency that monitors earthquake activity, announced that the quake occurred at a medium to high depth of 169 km below the epicenter on Saturday evening.
Immediately after the earthquake, the National Tsunami Warning Center in the US issued a warning of a possible tsunami threat.
The competent authorities are reviewing the exact size, epicenter and depth of the earthquake.
The GFZ identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), which included another earthquake of magnitude 5.3.
According to preliminary seismic data, the tremors did not cause any significant damage, but many people may have felt them as mild tremors in the epicenter area.
Weak tremors were also recorded in Yelizovo, 46 km from the epicenter, and other towns and cities near the epicenter where residents felt the earthquake.
