Trial of Safwat al-Sherif and his sons in illicit gain charges postponed

Cairo Criminal Court postponed on Tuesday the trial of Safwat al-Sherif, the former Shura Council speaker, and his two sons to 27 February. They are charged with illicit gain and abuse of power to achieve illegal fortunes.

The Illicit Gain Authority had referred Sherif, his sons Ihab and Ashraf (fugitive) to the Criminal Court on charges of achieving LE300 million by illegal means, and ordered them to return the money in addition to a fine equal to the same amount, all totalling LE600 million.

It had also requested the arrest of his son Ashraf as ordered by the Interpol.

Sherif has allegedly gained a fortune by abusing his power as president of the General Information Authority, chairman of the Radio and Television Union, minister of information and speaker of the Shura Council.

His wife, Iqbal Atiya Halaby, and his daughter, Iman are also implicated in the case.
