Trial of central bank embezzler postponed to 20 December

The Giza Criminal Court postponed on Tuesday once more the trial of Fadya al-Sharqawi, a former Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) employee who is charged with embezzling LE2.8 million from the CBE's mint, judicial sources said.

The trial was postponed until 20 December.

The court earlier heard the testimony of the defendant, who said she only confessed to committing the crime after she was told that security had arrested her son and husband, to pressure her into confessing to the crime.

In May the defendant confessed to embezzling the money over time in order to pay off enormous debts she accumulated through becoming involved in the illegal trade of gold. She has since retracted her admission.
