The Supreme State Security Court will resume Sunday the trial of 26 defendants in the case known as the "Nasr City terrorist cell."
Eighteen defendants were arrested and eight others were tried in absentia. The defendants are accused of forming a group espousing extremist ideas against the law and possessing explosives and weapons without license.
According to prosecution investigations, the defendants were arrested in a number of criminal dens upon an arrest warrant from the public prosecutor. The procesutor issued the arrest warrant in light of a National Security Agency investigation, which reported that the defendants were preparing for terrorist operations in Egypt during the past Eid al-Adha.
According to investigations, defendant Karim al-Bedaiwy was killed as he exchanged fire with security forces during his arrest. Bedaiwy was reportedly killed after fire broke out in his apartment which contained explosive substances.
