Transportation Ministry trying to obtain US$ 1.5 billion loan to construct a fourth metro line

The Ministry of Transportation is considering taking out a Japanese government loan to finance construction of a fourth metro line in Cairo. The ministry would first need official presidential approval.

The fourth metro line would run from al-Malak al-Saleh to Nadi al-Ramaya. The project is set to launch in July 2011.

The line would cost an estimated US$1.5 billion, according to an official source, who added that a portion of the funding will come from the national budget. The source said the National Tunnel Authority has completed all feasibility studies for the metro line.

The ministry is coordinating with Cairo and Giza governorates, according to the source. Construction completion is expected to take around 4 years, the source added.
