Tourism revenues hit LE1 million over Eid: minister

The total income from tourism during Egypt's Eid vacation hit LE1 million, said Minister for Antiquities Affairs, Mohamed Ibrahim.

The figure comprises income from tourist visits to the pyramids, the citadel and the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square.

The Eid holiday saw 31,475 Egyptians and 1,667 foreigners visit the pyramids, Ibrahim said on Tuesday.

Ibrahim added that 2,685 Egyptians visited the Egyptian Museum, in addition to 697 foreign tourists. 21,154 Egyptians and 486 foreigners visited the citadel.

The Egyptian tourism sector has suffered as a result of the country's two revolutions since 2011, which saw presidents Hosni Mubarak and Mohamed Morsy toppled from power.

Tourism Minister Hesham Zaazou said late July that pro-Morsy protests demanding his return to power were having a deleterious affect on the tourism sector.

Tourism is one of the principal sources of Egyptian income. Four million Egyptians work in the sector.
