“It’s too late to apply the law on corrupting political life in the upcoming parliamentary elections," said high elections committee member Ahmed Khafagy. “Disqualifying candidates needs a court order.”
The law, which the military council issued on Monday and was welcomed by political parties, was criticized by many legal experts. “The wording of the law is ambiguous,” said law professor Atef al-Banna, while law professor Tharwat Badawy considered it a means to protect the corrupt.
As soon as the law was issued, the public prosecution received scores of complaints requesting the disqualification of former National Democratic Party members from running in upcoming elections.
Prosecutors said the law would only go into effect after it is published in an official newspaper.
