As Thursday approaches, Italy prepares for escalatory measures against Egypt

"If there is no change in Egypt's approach to cooperation in regards to the murder of Guilio Regeni, our government is prepared to respond immediately with appropriate measures," said Italian Foreign Minister Paulo Gentiloni in a briefing to the Senate on Tuesday, according to the Italian news agency AKI.

Gentiloni added that the government will inform the parliament of those measures expeditiously, AKI said.

The briefing came in anticipation of an Egyptian delegation arriving in Rome on Thursday to discuss their findings in the Regeni case. Gentiloni stressed that as a matter of national duty, the government is required to defend Regeni tirelessly against anyone who might offend his memory.

Gentiloni drew on the statement made by Regini's mother, in which she said that she had seen the embodiment of all the evil in the world in the brutal killing of her son.

"We demand the truth, and we will not accept any artfully made-up explanations, and we will not surrender to forgetting this incident," the Italian official said to the Senate.

"We will not allow the dignity of our country to be trampled," he concluded, according to AKI.
