Three sentenced to life in prison for armed robbery

The Shubra al-Kheima Criminal Court in Cairo sentenced three men to life in prison for the armed robbery of former presidential hopeful Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh last year.

Muslim Karam, Ihab Bayyoumi and Hesham Abdel Latifwere found guilty of stealing Abouel Fotouh’s car at gunpoint on the Ring Road, as well as hitting him on the head with a rifle butt. The incident happened in February 2012 as Abouel Fotouh and his driver made their way home from an election rally in Monufiya Governorate. He sustained minor injuries. 

Accomplices Mohamed Sobeih and Mohamed Nabeeh were also given three-year sentences, with defendant Walid Kamal being sentenced to hard labor and one year in jail.
