Three policemen were killed Monday in Daqahliya in an armed ambush against police security in Mansoura in front of the university bridge.
The assailants fled the scene in the aftermath of the attack.
The fallen police officers are Mohamed Safwat, of Talkha security, Saad Ali Ibrahim, of Talkha investigations department, and Ahmed abdel Mohsen, of the traffic police.
According to eyewitnesses, the security personnel were attacked by four masked gunmen on motorbikes while they were inspecting vehicles. They fired shots and quickly escaped, leaving the three policemen dead.
The deceased were transferred to Talkha Public Hospital.
Major General Sami al-Meehy, Daqahliya security chief, headed to inspect the scene of the incident. Security troops were deployed around the bridge and Gamasa road. Roads leading to the site were closed. Surrounding areas are being combed in search for the perpetrators.
A public prosecution team arrived on the scene to investigate and listen to testimonies of eyewitnesses and other security personnel at the ambush.
Hundreds of the residents gathered in front of the hospital to protest the autopsies of the deceased victims. Security officials, however, were able to convince them of the necessity of examining the bodies and removing the bullets. Sources said that Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim delegated a team from the ministry to help investigate the accident.
