Thousands rally against SCAF in several governorates

Thousands of protesters in several of Egypt’s governorates took to the streets on Friday to call for the country’s military leaders to transfer power to civilians and stop violence against peaceful demonstrators.

In Alexandria, roughly 7,000 people staged protests in two different areas: one in front of the Qaed Ibrahim mosque in the Ramle area and another at the Northern Military Command headquarters in Sidi Gaber. They chanted slogans against the ruling Supreme Council of Armed Forces.

Several political factions staged a demonstration in Mahata Square in Aswan protesting Wednesday’s attack on the Abbasseya sit-in and demanding that power be transferred to civilians.

Protests were held in several squares in Banha City, Qalyubiya, demanding that Article 28 of the Constitutional Declaration, which stipulates that the decisions of the Presidential Elections Commission cannot be appealed, be abolished.

Members of various political movements marched through the streets in Minya carrying banners calling for the transfer of power and an end to violence against protesters.

In Fayoum, dozens protested downtown against the assault on the Abbasseya protesters.

In Gharbiya, hundreds members of the Muslim Brotherhood, the April 6 Youth Movement and Salafis staged protests in the cities of Mahalla and Tanta demanding that those involved in the Abbasseya killings be prosecuted.

Salafis and revolutionary youth held marches in Qena City demanding investigations into the attack at Abbasseya.

Competing protests were held in Damietta, where hundreds staged a protest in Hurreya Square proclaiming that the revolution continues while others held a demonstration expressing support for the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.

Protests were also held in North Sinai, Suez, and Assiut Governorates calling for the protection of protesters and a transfer of power.
