Thanaweya Amma examinations to be conducted electronically in schools: minister

The Thanaweya Amma (high school) examinations will all be conducted electronically in schools, except for students with special needs, Education Minister Tarek Shawky announced.

For students to pass the exam and move onto the next grade, they more score at least 25 percent in each subject both terms, with their total scores made up of 50 percent first time and 50 percent second term exams, the minister said.

If a student scores less than 50 percent in a term, they will have the opportunity to retake the test at a later date. 

These announcements came during a press conference held by Shawky, during which he answered the inquiries of parents and students about the decisions taken last Sunday regarding the first and second term exams.

Directed by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the Higher Committee for the Management of the Coronavirus Crisis, Shawky issued special decisions regarding first term exams and the resumption of studies in the second term.

The decision were as follows:

Decision 1: The first term exams will be held from February 27 to March 9, 2021, while the third preparatory third secondary  (Thanaweya Amma) certificate examinations will be held at the end of the year.

Decision 2: Exams for subjects not included in the GPA will be conducted at the end of the year.

Decision 3: Students can begin to attend school again with attendance remaining optional, starting Wednesday, March 10, 2021. Voluntary absence requires official approval from a parent.

Decision 4: The parent has the right to choose to repeat the school year for their son or daughter by submitting an official request to the educational administration.

Decision 5-a: Paper exams will be held at the end of each month at school from March to May for grades from the fourth primary to the second preparatory, as an alternative to the second term exams.

Decision 5-b: Electronic exams (from home) may be conducted at the end of every month from March to May for grades from the fourth primary to the second preparatory, as an alternative to the second term exams.

Decision 6: An experimental e-exam will be held for Thanaweya Amma students at home in April.

Decision 7: Home-based studying students and failing students will undergo Thanaweya Amma exams electronically in accordance to the new assessment system.

Decision 8: Exams dates for expatriate students and vocational education students will be announced before the end of next week.

Decision 9: Electronic high school examinations, as previously announced, will be held electronically for all students at the school, according to a schedule, which will be announced before the end of February.

Decision 10: The Egyptian Scholastic Test (EST) exam is the only qualification for American diploma students to enroll within Egyptian universities.
