Original director Doug Liman is on board to helm a second "Edge of Tomorrow" film, and a pair of exciting new writers have been tapped to provide a script.
Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse worked on February's Jesse Owens sports biopic "Race" together, and are again teaming up on the treatment for "Edge of Tomorrow 2" — or whatever it's going to be called.
The unconventional 2014 sci-fi action film had Tom Cruise as a soldier stuck in a time loop, and Emily Blunt as his mentor ensuring that he can, eventually, defeat a tide of otherwise unstoppable alien beings.
Although first presented as "All You Need Is Kill," named after the Japanese novel it was based on, it was renamed "Edge of Tomorrow" before release, with promotional material eventually settling on the more explanatory imperative "Live. Die. Repeat." as its de-facto title.
It recouped only US$100m of its $178m budget upon domestic release in the release but then went on to gross $370m thanks to a more receptive overseas box office and home media audience, one reason that interest levels have been adjusted for the eventual sequel.
Shrapnel and Waterhouse have already been asked to rewrite Charlize Theron movie "The Gray Man" for Christopher McQuarrie, who is also involved in the production (but not as director, as originally reported), as Slashfilm points out in its report.
