Teachers continued strikes in several governorates on Wednesday, demanding the dismissal of the education minister, better salaries and better working conditions.
Members of the Sheffield branch of the National Union of Teachers in Britain expressed solidarity with their Egyptian counterparts. “Without the right to strike and form independent syndicates there would be but limited democratic freedoms,” said union secretary Ben Morris.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Essam Sharaf met with Education Minister Ahmed Moussa to discuss the demands of the teachers.
The Teachers Syndicate issued a statement on Wednesday, accusing the ministry of ignoring the demands of the teachers, and the Muslim Brotherhood of inciting discord among them.
“We did not take part in the strike so as not to jeopardize the educational process and the students,” said Muslim Brotherhood Education Secretary Ahmed al-Halawany.
The syndicate called on all teachers to continue their strike until all demands have been met.
