Egypt's General Prosecution has remanded a kindergarten teacher into custody for four days, pending investigations over beating young children in his care. The decision was made based in part on the accounts of the parents of 45 students.
A video clip recently circulated on the internet shows the teacher, Magdy al-Shaer, hitting students at a kindergarten in Zefta in Gharbiya Governorate, sparking uproar among viewers.
Gharbiya's governor, Mohamed Mostafa al-Fakharani, has ordered the formation of a panel to review kindergartens province-wide. The kindergarten where Shaer worked has been closed down and its operating license rescinded.
