An Arabic language teacher at el-Nobareyya Industrial School in Beheira has been accused of placing his foot on a student’s neck and beating him in the school courtyard in front of other students and teachers.
The student, Ali Hassan, said that the Arabic language teacher Reda Mahmoud Khalifa was punishing him for arriving late on 2 March 2010.
The student’s father filed an incident report at the Nobareyya Police Station and a complaint with the Ministry of Education and another with Fathi Sorour, speaker of the People’s Assembly. He demanded that the teacher be punished for robbing his son of his dignity, saying, "My dignity and my son’s dignity were lost under the teacher’s shoe."
Hassan was most surprised that he was punished so severely for only being late to school.
The teacher pushed him to the ground and started beating him severely, leaving beat marks on his back, he said. The teacher then placed his shoe on the student’s neck and shouted, "This school needs a man."
At this point, when he started feeling back and head pain, two teachers intervened. He was then taken to a room to wait for the doctor, but the school did not call an ambulance, he said.
Another student, Adel Sabri Ateyya, confirmed the events, adding that the teacher had never done anything similar before.
Other teachers, who declined to give their names, said they also witnessed the incident, but that the teacher in question is polite and they did not understand why he beat the student.
The teacher has been referred to an investigative committee.
