Tax Authority: Traders must adhere to new cigarette prices

The Tax Authority has warned wholesale and retail cigarette traders against selling their wares at prices higher than those specified by producers, on which recent tax increases were calculated.

According to Tax Authority President Ahmed Abdel Ghaffar, a 5-percent tax has been levied on cement, an 8-percent tax on steel, and a 40-percent tax on cigarettes.

New retail prices of locally produced cement will vary between LE525 and LE580 per ton, while prices of imported cement will range between LE460 and LE500.

The Trade and Industry Ministry has ordered traders to print new prices on sacks of cement.

Tax Authority Research Department Director Mamdouh Omar said that many consumers had switched to alternative tobacco products due to the numerous tax increases levied on cigarettes.
