Tantawi attends funeral for soldier shot dead in Abbasseya clashes

Head of the ruling military council Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi attended on Saturday the military funeral of Samir Anwar Ismail, a soldier who was shot dead in the clashes that erupted on Friday in Abbasseya.

The funeral was attended also by Sami Anan, chief of staff of the armed forces, and other members of the ruling military council, state television reported on Saturday.

The funerary prayers were formed at Aal Rashdan Mosque in Nasr City and the coffin, draped in Egypt’s flag, was carried amid funerary music and a military procession.

Clashes erupted on Friday between army forces and protesters at the Defense Ministry in Abbasseya, leading to the arrest and injury of hundreds. Around 148 members of the armed forces were injured.

Tantawi later visited injured members of the armed forces in the Kobri al-Qobba hospital.

He called for providing maximum care to the injured members of the armed forces.

Tantawi also toured the site of the clashes after roads were opened to traffic.
