Health Minister Ahmed Emad Eddine decided on Monday to close the company that imports the Avastin medicine, which caused complications for patients who then went blind after being treated by the Tanta ophthalmology hospital.
The decision came during the minister’s visit to Gharbiya governorate.
In remarks on Sunday, the minister said that the Avastin used in treating patients who went blind in Tanta is not registered by the ministry’s pharmaceuticals department, which means that the decision to use the substance was a violation by the Tanta ophthalmology hospital.
Emad Eddine also decided to refer the hospital chief and his assistants involved in treating the patients to investigation.
