Tamarod has gathered more than 15 million petition signatures demanding President Mohamed Morsy’s resignation and calling for early presidential elections, a leader from the opposition campaign said on Tuesday.
Tamarod had originally set a target of 15 million signatories to call on Morsy to step down.
Mohamed Abdel Aziz, a member of the campaign's central committee, said Tamarod will soon hold a press conference to announce the total number of petitions gathered, adding that the figure will be a surprise to Egyptians and Morsy alike.
In statements to Al-Masry Al-Youm, Abdel Aziz added: "Morsy has lost the support of the people, apart from his group [the Muslim Brotherhood]. He seeks to satisfy the US, but to him we say that the Americans have not helped [ex-President Hosni] Mubarak nor will they help him."
It is already too late for the Brotherhood or other political parties to launch any initiative to dissuade the people from protesting on 30 June.
Tamarod spokesperson Mahmoud Badr said the campaign will hold a press conference in Qalyubiya on Thursday as part of preparations for mass protests scheduled for 30 June. High-profile political and media figures would be attending the conference, he added.
In statements to Al-Masry Al-Youm, Badr said that Tamarod is in meetings with youth organisations from different political groups to form a committee to manage 30 June preparations so that the founding aims ot eh demonstrations could be achieved.
The campaign also said that its activists in Europe and the US are planning to produce a CD documenting alleged violations committed by the Brotherhood, before distributing it to Western media.
British authorities have given expatriate Egyptians a permit to stage a protest there on 30 June, Badr revealed.
Meanwhile, Tamarod campaigners will continue to collect petitions and rally protesters ahead of the 30 June protests.
