Tamarod: Draft law on protests ‘oppressive’

Mohamed Abdel Aziz, the Tamarod campaign official in charge of political communication, said that any law that suppresses the right to peaceful protest which Egyptians acquired when they launched the 25 January and 30 June revolutions would be “oppressive.”

In comments on the law organising protests which the cabinet of ministers is discussing, Abdel Aziz added that the law should address non-peaceful protests without being used to suppress or prevent protests in general.

According to the draft law, people are not allowed to demonstrate or stage sit-ins in front of government institutions such as the People’s Assembly, the presidency or the cabinet of ministers. Demonstrations in front of military or police establishments are also prohibited. Breaches of the law subject the person in violation to imprisonment and fines of no less than LE100,000 and no more than LE300,000.
