Hassan Shaheen, co-founder of the Tamarod Movement, on Wednesday posted on Facebook that the movement does not support any certain presidential candidate.
“This is a misleading to public opinion,” he wrote.
“Tamarod is a popular movement that does not belong to any particular person,” he added. “Its goal has always been to hold early presidential elections. And everyone has the right to choose whoever he wants.”
Shaheen said many members support Hamdeen Sabbahi, founder of the Popular Current. “I respect their viewpoints and those of the others who support other candidates,” he said.
Shaheen himself had announced his support for Sabbahi, while co-founder Mahmoud Badr supported Sisi, triggering division within the movement.
The movement led protests last year that prompted the army, led by Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, to bring down the regime of President Mohamed Morsy.
