Switzerland is optimistic about reaching an agreement with Egypt soon to return some US$445 million belonging to ousted President Hosni Mubarak and his aides, now that a first instance verdict was issued to this effect, said Valentine Zellweger, head of the Swiss Foreign Ministry's international law department.
Zellweger denied the decision was connected with Egypt’s parliamentary elections, and explained that Swiss law allows the return of illicit funds.
Swiss authorities have been investigating suspicions by the Egyptian government that Mubarak laundered the money.
