Former first lady Suzanne Mubarak made an exceptional visit to her husband in Tora prison Monday, accompanied by her daughter-in-law, Khadija al-Gammal, who was visiting her husband, Gamal Mubarak.
The visit was permitted as per directives by Interior Ministry Prisons Department head Mohamed Naguib, a source from the department said, adding that former regime officials at the prison do not receive preferential treatment.
The source added that the pair left their cars outside the prison wall and took a prison vehicle to get dropped off near the cells, and noted that both women were electronically searched before they entered.
Mubarak and other former regime officials had been imprisoned on multiple charges of corruption and murder.
Last month, Gamal Mubarak demanded that his father be transferred from the prison hospital to another one.
“Hosni Mubarak suffered an atrial flutter and rapid heartbeat at dawn on Tuesday, and [Tora prison] doctors saved him from death,” the ex-president’s son said, according to security sources.
