Suzanne Mubarak under investigation over foreign funds

Suzanne Mubarak is facing investigation and possible criminal charges relating to the misuse of foreign aid. The investigation represents the first criminal legal action against the wife of former President Hosni Mubarak.

Judicial sources say the Public Funds Prosecution (PFP) has started investigating accusations against members of the Mubarak family and others that they stole foreign aid funds indended for development and cultural projects, including the famous Reading For All Project (RFAP).

The accused include deposed President Hosni Mubarak, his wife Suzanne and sons Gamal and Alaa, former Information Minister Anas al-Fiqi, former Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni and an unspecified publishing house.

Former MP Mostafa Bakry said the funds were used for the personal benefit of those under investigation, as well as others, without passing through the competent supervisory bodies, such as the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics and the Administrative Supervisory Authority.

He also said large sums of money were given by direct order to a publishing house whose owner was appointed to the RFAP executive committee headed by Suzanne Mubarak.

He also said the publishing house invested the money in companies in which Alaa and Gamal Mubarak were partners instead of using it for publishing childrens books.
