Attorney General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud has referred 18 people to an expedited criminal court on various charges relating to an attack on Coptic protesters outside the Egyptian Radio and Television Union building on the Maspero Corniche on Saturday 14 May.
The charges include thuggery, exhibiting force, attacking peaceful demonstrators and endangering their lives, disturbing public security and peace, and destroying public and private property. The trial is to take place on Saturday, 21 May.
A spokesman for Mahmoud said that the prosecution had begun its investigation into the incident and taken the testimonies of police officers and 36 victims who were injured in the assault.
The Coptic protesters were attacked by a large number of assailants, some identified as Salafis, who threw Molotov cocktails and fired guns.
