A suspect allegedly involved in an attempted assassination of former President Hosni Mubarak in 1995 has returned to Cairo, Cairo International Airport security sources said.
Hussein Ahmed Shemit was arrested on his arrival from Iran via Turkey on Sunday after 20 years in exile, the sources told state-run news agency MENA.
Shemit was accompanied by his Algerian wife and five children. His family was granted entry, but he was detained by airport authorities as he has been convicted in Egyptian courts.
The sources said security authorities will allow Shemit to appeal the rulings.
On 26 June 1995, Mubarak traveled to Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to attend a summit of African leaders. Moving from the airport to his residence, his motorcade was attacked by gunmen, which led to the death of two police officers.
Some accused Sudan’s Islamist government and Al-Qaeda terrorist group of involvement.
But Egypt’s Jama'a al-Islamiya, a once-banned, extremist group, claimed responsibility. The group led an armed campaign against security authorities during the 1990s but later renounced violence.
