The Supreme Judicial Council has rejected the two main proposals for the judicial authority draft law. One proposal had been drafted by the Judges Club, and the other by a committee within the council itself.
The proposals had raised widespread anger among lawyers.
In a statement on Saturday, the council's president Hossam al-Ghiryany warned of discord between lawyers and judges, which he said had been promoted by internal and external forces close to the former regime.
“The statement canceled an emergency meeting that was planned by the council,” said Councilor Mohamed Abdel Mahgoub.
While some analysts suggest that Ghiryany's statement has put an end to the crisis, lawyers still continued to protest in Cairo and other provinces on Sunday, shutting down courts and denying entry to judges.
They rejected Ghiryany’s statement and called for a general assembly to tackle what they said were attempts by the Judicial Elections Committee to paralyze their syndicate.
They also called for the postponement of the draft law until after the parliamentary elections.
For his part, Judges Club spokesman Mahmoud al-Sherif said the club’s recommendation to suspend court hearings is not obligatory.
