Supporters of former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq launched a campaign to nominate him for the presidential elections to be held at the end of this year.
They distributed leaflets among people in the streets and created a page on Facebook for that purpose.
The supporters met with Shafiq on Friday and asked him to run in the elections, a move he said he might consider if the Egyptian people asked him to.
Shafiq had won the sympathy of many when he resigned in response to demands by demonstrators, who considered him part of the ousted regime of former President Hosni Mubarak.
