Egypt's Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade has no plans to import wheat until the end of 2013, spokesperson Nasser al-Farrash said in a statement on Friday, adding that strategic stock of local wheat will cover demand until December.
Farrash denied that the ministry would import wheat in July, due to a reduction in imports and wastage following improvements to storage of local stocks.
Egypt is the world's largest wheat importer, consuming around 10 million tonnes each year.
The government has attempted to reduce imports and increase output by encouraging farmers to increase their export prices to LE400 per ardeb.
According to the latest official figures, Egyptian farmers have already cropped around 3.508 million tonnes of wheat in 2013.
