The Supply and Social Affairs Ministry on Sunday asked that the Petroleum Ministry import butane gas because none has arrived at Alexandria or Suez harbors during the past few days, supply sources said.
The Petroleum Ministry expects the supplies from abroad to arrive within hours to fulfill the local need of butane gas cylinders, the sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm.
The supply decreased from about 1 million to 900,000 cylinders, the sources added, attributing this to a low quantity of gas in stock.
They said the supply can’t fulfill winter needs.
The ministry notified the armed forces’ central operations chamber and the Petroleum Ministry about areas that need gas cylinders to prevent a crisis, the sources said.
Higher temperatures led to a decline in demand for the cylinders, of which there has been a shortage in past months. The crisis is expected to subside as winter comes to an end.
