Lieutenant General Mohab Mamish, Suez Canal Authority chairman, said that the canal hit a record in daily revenue Thursday with US$19.6 million, or about LE120 million.
More than 3.5 million tons of cargo and a total of 66 ships passed through the canal, Mamish said in a statement, adding that it was the highest amount of cargo in one day for this year, according to canal statistics.
The passage is a vital source of foreign currency for the country, along with tourism, oil and gas exports and remittances from Egyptians living abroad.
The Suez Canal Authority raised tolls for all vessels passing through the strategic waterway by 3 percent starting in March this year.
