Ahmed Fadel, head of the Suez Canal Authority, said the canal brought in US$434.6 million in revenues in May. Around 1,425 ships crossed the canal, with a 0.9 percent increase in cargo to reach 78.1 million tons, compared to 77.4 million tons in May 2011.
Fadel said a statement Tuesday, which commemorated the canal reopening for navigation in 1975, that the canal's revenues reached US$75.9 billion in the past 37 years.
The Canal currently is able to host 10 percent of seaborne world trade, he added.
