The Suez Canal on Sunday reached the highest rate of shipload in a year: 3.6 million tons per day, or 44 percent more than the average daily load of 2.5 million tons.
Suez Canal Authority spokesperson Tareq Hassanein told the Middle East News Agency that maritime transport today depends on large vessels.
"It is the total tonnage of ships and not to the number of vessels that counts,” he explained.
He said 57 vessels crossed the canal on Sunday, including English giant container CMA CGM MARCO POLO from Malta and heading to the United Arab Emirates, carrying 176,000 tons alone.
