Students to stage march Friday to oust Cairo University leaders

Cairo University students announced on Tuesday their plans to march to Tahrir Square Friday to demand the removal of university leaders they accuse of being loyal to former President Hosni Mubarak.

In a statement, the students demanded the formation of transitional councils to run Egypt's universities until the end of the current academic year, after which elections for new leadership would be organized.

The statement stressed the importance of investigating corruption at universities, as well as abolishing all penalties and investigations concerning university protests.

The students also requested an official apology to professors and protesters for relying on military police to disperse their demonstrations, following reports by university management that claimed the protesters were involved in thuggery and vandalizing.

They did not rule out staging a massive march toward Cairo University's management headquarters on Wednesday.

The university’s Muslim Brotherhood students said they would join protesters in the march, which will begin Friday at 10:30 am, starting at the university and ending in Tahrir Square.
