Student protests planned to remove university leaders

The Coalition of Egypt’s Student Unions, which is comprised of 17 student unions in addition to faculty members, has called for demonstrations and open sit-ins on 13 September to demand the removal of state university leaders.

The demonstrations are set to take place from noon until 4 pm at all universities.

In a statement on Wednesday, the coalition said it was upset that the cabinet has not implemented its decision to remove previously appointed university leaders and choose their replacements by direct elections.

A coalition of students from private universities also said it would join the demonstrations and call for the dismissal of Hatem al-Bulok, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Private Universities.

The Coalition of Egypt's Student Unions is demanding a maximum for tuition fees, the appointment of private university administrators by the Higher Education Ministry, and a profit ceiling for private universities of no more than 10 percent, with the rest to be allocated to improving the quality of education.

The coalition also said its students will not pay tuition fees until their demands are met.
