Teenage student Girgis, 19, committed suicide on Monday morning by jumping off the top floor of the Cairo tower in al-Jazera.
A resident of Cairo’s al-Ameria district, Girgis was a hard-working student who aimed to join one of the best colleges in Egypt following his family’s wishes. He would spent days studying until the early hours of the morning, though hit a block with English.
He joined the institute of languages, hoping to improve his grasp of the language and gain better marks, but found his grades were less than excellent and feared this would impact chances of entering the top colleges.
Investigations revealed that Girgis committed suicide due to stress from the Thanaweya Amma summer exams, facing great pressure to perform well. His family stated that his psychological condition had worsened recently.
