Strained Egyptian-Sudanese relations postpone Renaissance Dam negotiations

Sudanese sources have said that the 10th round of Renaissance Dam negotiations scheduled for Saturday in Khartoum was postponed due strained political relations between Egypt and Sudan, noting that Sudanese nationals are continuously being searched, detained and tortured in Cairo.

The sources added that Sudanese Water Resources and Electricity Minister Moataz Moses’s visit to Brazil at the scheduled time of the meeting was deliberate for that reason, especially considering that the visit is not very important.

Additionally, Sudanese media and social networking sites attacked Egypt, prompting the Parliament to summon Sudanese Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ghandour to clarify the matter.

Spokesperson for the Renaissance Dam issue, Alaa Yassin, however, said there are discussions to hold the meeting later this month prior to or in parallel with the six-party meeting of foreign and irrigation ministers, as well as the technical consultants. Alternative consulting offices will be considered for conducting the technical studies, bearing in mind Egypt’s concerns and the Declaration of Principles that was signed in March regarding the rules for the first filling and the annual operation of the dam.
