The State Council Judges Club has decided to submit an official request to the council’s executive board asking it to absolve the judiciary of responsibility for supervising future elections in Egypt.
The decision was made on the basis that none of the judicial rulings to have been issued regarding Egypt's recently concluded parliamentary elections–which were marred by widespread reports of electoral infractions–have been carried out.
Court of Cassation Vice President Ahmed Mekky opined that the State Council had "forfeited its authority" by allowing the judicial inspection departments at the justice and interior ministries to appoint judges to oversee elections.
