Staff Brigadier General Tareq al-Mahdi to temporarily oversee Egyptian TV

Staff Brigadier General Tareq Mahdi will supervise the Egyptian Radio and Television Union (ERTU) temporarily until a suitable person is selected for the position. Mahdi will liaise between the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces and the ERTU, informed sources said.

Al-Mahdi was leader of the army's Air Defense Forces, according to sources.

There has been talk of the abolition of the Information Ministry in response to pro-democracy protesters' demands.

Egyptian authorities earlier put former Minister of Information Anas al-Fiqqi under house arrest, informed sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

Al-Fiqqi reportedly resigned after former President Hosni Mubarak's ouster following mass nationwide protests.

Over 18 consecutive days of protest, Egyptian state television accused the revolutionaries of attempting to destabilize the country and of being paid to implement foreign agendas. State television's coverage aroused the fury of Egyptian viewers and the protesters.
