A Spanish court is convening on 9 February to consider Egyptian authorities’ request to extradite Egyptian businessman Hussein Salem, who is wanted on charges of corruption, an Egyptian judicial official said on Thursday.
Assistant Justice Minister Assem al-Gohary, head of the Illicit Gains Authority, said a Spanish court was convening on 19 January to consider the extradition of Salem’s son, Khaled.
In June, the Egyptian government formally requested that Spain extradite Salem to Egypt so that he could face trial on charges of squandering public funds and abusing political power.
Salem is currently being tried in absentia by the Cairo Criminal Court alongside ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, his two sons Alaa and Gamal, former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly and six of his top aides.
Salem, a close personal friend of Mubarak, fled Egypt on 3 February, eight days before Mubarak stepped down after a popular uprising. He was arrested in Madrid in June for his alleged involvement in money laundering. His son Khaled and daughter Magda were arrested on related charges in July.
Gohary said he requested the judicial delegation attending Khaled’s session to attend another one on 16 January that would consider the extradition of Magda.
