South Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied on Wednesday reports that it is engaging in discussions with Israel to resettle Gaza residents in its territory.
The South Sudanese Foreign Ministry issued a statement that read: “We strongly deny the media reports claiming that the government of the Republic of South Sudan is engaged in discussions with Israel regarding the resettlement of Palestinians from Gaza in South Sudan.”
The statement continued, “These allegations are baseless and do not reflect the official position or policy of the government of the Republic of South Sudan.”
Earlier on Wednesday, Israel’s Channel 12 reported that Israel was holding talks with South Sudan as part of its plans to resettle Palestinians from the Gaza Strip in other countries.
The website for the newspaper Haaretz quoted an Israeli source as saying that “Quiet talks are being held in an attempt to find a country that will accept residents from Gaza, and there is no progress on this step at the current time.”
