The Rafah border crossing will be closed on Friday for security reasons and will be reopened on Saturday, an informed source told the state-run MENA news agency.
The decision to close the border comes after unknown armed assailants fired on a central security camp in the Ahrash area of Rafah.
Earlier on Friday, Maher abu Sobha, head of the border authority in Gaza, said Egyptian officials had informed him that the Rafah crossing would be closed until further notice.
The Rafah border crossing is the only open border for the 1.8 million people living in Gaza.
More than 400 people on eight buses crossed the border from Gaza on Thursday.
