The Socialist Popular Alliance Party on Saturday launched a public campaign nationwide to support Popular Alliance MP Abul Ezz al-Hariry’s candidacy for the presidential elections. Hariry announced last week that he planned to run in the upcoming election.
In a statement on released last Tuesday, the party said that Khaled al-Sayed, member of the General Secretariat, is in charge of the campaign, and that a special page was launched on Facebook for that purpose.
The party made the decision following a poll conducted among its members.
The party had earlier proposed Hariry as a consensus candidate.
In a meeting on 3 March, the party’s secretariat said progressive and socialist forces need to back one candidate to propose a political platform that prioritizes social justice and freedoms.
The party said it will seek agreement on one candidate to increase the chances of winning, adding that consensus would be based on a platform that benefits people and meets their needs.
