Six preachers referred to investigation for changing Friday speech

The Religious Endowments department in Monufiya has decided to refer six preachers to investigation for violating regulations and changing the Friday sermons cued by the ministry.

Ramadan al-Sobki, head of the preaching section of the department, said the monitoring committee noticed a change in the speeches in Tala, Ashmoun, al-Shohadaa and al-Bagour.

Authorities which overthrew the Muslim Brotherhood's government in 2013 believe that some imams were used to serve the organization's political agenda.

Prior to the anniversary of the January 25 revolution this year, the Religious Endowments Ministry distributed a leaflet to mosques that instructed imams not to participate in protests on January 25 during the Friday sermons.

The leaflet described the call for protests on January 25 as a "full crime, and poisoned ominous calls that aim at sabotage, murder and destruction in the country". The fatwa also determined that calls for protests were a desire to "get Egyptians implicated in violence and terrorism to serve the enemies of the homeland".

The leaflet encouraged imams to call on people to unite and build the country rather than destroy it.
