Six people were killed and four are missing after a four-story building collapsed in Khalafawi, Shubra, on Wednesday.
A search is underway for the missing residents.
A failure by local authorities to execute demolition orders on time, and the unauthorized construction of additional floors, are typically behind catastrophic building collapses, the frequency of which has been increasing in recent years.
In July, at least 19 people died in four buildings that collapsed in Gomrok, Alexandria also due to illegal construction. The owner was arrested days later.
